Importing Images

Once WinWatermark has been opened, the first step is to Import Images into the program for watermarking. There are several ways in which to import images into WinWatermark. Use the method that best suits your needs.

Drag & Drop

Images can be dragged and dropped onto the WinWatermark interface.

Import Button

Click the IMPORT button in the lower left hand corner of the WinWatermark interface and browse for images on your hard drive.

Device Button

Click the DEVICE button to import images directly from a USB connected device (such as a smart phone or camera) or from a SD card slot.

Camera Button

For systems that have a built-in webcam, or other type of camera attached to the PC, WinWatermark now allows snapshots to be taken and imported directly into the application right from your webcam. This is a great feature for Facebook users or a fun way to snap a photo of yourself, personalize, and share with your friends and family via our share tools and email.

Of course, you may also Import from Facebook using the File Menu:

From the File Menu, select one of the import options available.

This is the same action as clicking the IMPORT button in the lower left hand corner of the screen.

File | Import Facebook Album

This handy new feature of WinWatermark Pro II lets you make a direct connection to Facebook, so that images stored there can be digitally copyrighted.

File | Import from Device

This is the equivalent action of clicking the DEVICE button, also located in the lower left hand corner of the screen.

Once images are imported, they are automatically placed into an Untitled Library, which displays the number of photos imported.

Getting Started Screens   

Step 1: Import

To begin using WinWatermark Video Edition, you must first import your video.

Step 2: Select

Once imported into a Library, your video must then be selected to begin the watermark process

Step 3: Edit

After your video has been selected, it will begin to PLAY.  At this time click the TEXT or IMAGE watermark icons.

Simply select your Font, Size, Color, and type your TEXT.  Use the placement icons to situate your watermark on your video as desired. The same process is used for image watermarks.

Step 4: Process

Once your video watermarks are placed as desired, click the process icon.

Note that you can Rename your Video when you process the watermarked version.

Process settings include: Resolution, create an Album for sharing, convert video format, and Rename

Step 5: Share

Sharing your processed videos is a snap with WinWatermark’s built in sharing tools.

To view the Quick Start Guide when WinWatermark is opened, deselect the checkbox “Don’t show again”.  This will, once again, provide the reminder screens every time the application is opened.

How to Prepare Photos for the Internet

Seldom will you find a photograph that is ready to use in your website that doesn’t require some sort of editing. One basic way to modify images is to crop them, which involves removing some portion of the image. Cropping changes the appearance of photographs and/or clip art. This allows the cropped image to fit better in the website’s layout, make a statement, or improve the overall appearance of the subject matter.

The following is list of cropping features available in WinWatermark software.

• Crop an image to show what is important – Change the focus of the photograph or emphasize specific portions of an image by cropping out less important or less desirable people or objects.
• Crop the background – Cropping out background clutter helps redirect the focus on the main subject. Cropping to break out of the box adds additional interest.
• Crop to change the orientation – Not only does the cropping change the photo from horizontal and fat to tall and narrow, it helps to focus attention on the most interesting part of the photo.
• Crop out the main subject – Sometimes the image that is most interesting or most useful is not the main focus of the photograph. Look at all aspects of an image to find areas that would be unique if cropped. Crop an image to bring that secondary portion of the image into focus and make a statement that may be entirely different from the original photo.
• Crop to create uniform images – Cropping and resizing so that each subject appears to be about the same distance from the camera provides a uniform appearance to a varied group of mug shots.
• Crop creative shapes – Used sparingly, photos cropped into unusual or unexpected shapes such as starbursts, ovals, or polygons can add a special touch to a newsletter or scrapbook layout or make a plain photograph more interesting.

Tips:

Use cropping to change the image size
Use a combination of cropping & resizing to change an image’s primary focus, which could also include re-sampling to zoom in/out on a subject.

Crop bleeds carefully
Cropping a photo that will bleed off the page can be tricky. Be sure not to crop so close that the main subject of the image gets lost off the edges.

Use cropping with other photo editing techniques
A combination of photo cropping with other graphics modifications such as color removal, tints, sharpening, and blurring is a great way to draw the eye to the most important area of the image.

Keep actual and perceived image size consistent
Avoid using just the cropping function, alone, to create images of the same size. Instead consider the appearance of people and objects in the image prior to cropping. Crop and re-size photos, such as mug shots or a series of landscapes so that like objects in the images appear at about the same size & distance from the viewer. Consider proportions within the photo when two cropped images appear in close proximity.

How to Watermark Photos Easily & Quickly Using WinWatermark

Image watermark

An image watermark makes your photos distinctly yours. Using your company logo is a great example of an image watermark. We also provide stock images from within our programs for you to use as well. No matter if you are using a text or image watermark (or both), WinWatermark provides the ability to save your custom watermark files, so you can use them over an over.

Date and/or time watermark

A date watermark is fairly self-explanatory. While used infrequently, the date and/or time stamp is used as the primary watermark on an image, serving its purpose of protecting the images you own. A date watermark doesn’t say much about you, as the photographer, but it can be handy in deterring others from stealing your valuable photos or be used for informational purposes.

Copyright/Registered/Trademark watermark

The copyright watermark is one of the best methods of protecting digital images. Not only does it inform users of your declaration of copyright, but it many times adds an additional layer of protection simply by using the © symbol. Adding the Copyright ©, Registered ®, or Trademarked ™ symbols is built-in to the features of WinWatermark software.

The key in building a watermark is to follow the step-by-step process involved. Be sure your image is protected, but at the same time do not take away from the beauty and focus of the original image.

Step-by-Step Process for Watermarking an Image

1) Isolate your original images – Prior to applying a watermark to your images, be sure all original copies of the images are stored in a safe place. A secondary backup location, such as on CD, DVD, or external hard drive, is a great way of ensuring the original image is preserved.

2) Import the images into WinWatermark – Once the images are imported into WinWatermark’s Library, decide how many images you want to watermark. From the Library, images can be selected or deselected if desired, allowing for a single image to be watermarked or all at once. If you have dozens of photos to protect, leave all images in the Library selected and watermark them as a batch process. This method “batch photo processing” is much more efficient, convenient, and time-saving solution. After deciding how many images to watermark, proceed to the next step.

3) Select Watermark Features – This is the process of building/creating the watermark that will be applied to all the images selected from within the Library. Considerations can include:

• Watermark size – small, large, etc
• Position – middle of photo, upper left/right, lower left/right, tiled across entire image, etc
• Format – bold, italics, underline, etc
• Watermark Type – text, image, symbols, combination, etc
• Transparency – determine the opacity of the watermark
• Font – size and type if using a text watermark
• Special features – shadowing, background, embossed, gradient, etc
• Rotation – will the watermark be rotated? Not a problem in WinWatermark!

Experiment with each of these options in WinWatermark. Remember, the idea is to protect your photos and not take away from the beauty of the image itself.

4) Export Watermarked Images – once the image or images have been watermarked, export them from WinWatermark.

5) Upload Images to Internet – When all digital photos have been successfully exported from WinWatermark, they are ready to be uploaded to the Internet.

Placing a watermark on pictures that you plan to publish to the web will identify them as your own work and discourage people from stealing your works or claiming them as their own. Here is a simple way to add a text watermark to pictures using WinWatermark software.

Before starting, you may need to know what the text watermark is and what kind of text can be used for watermarking. The text watermark is a phrase or sentence that identifies your pictures. While you may use any phrase or sentence, a good rule of thumb would be to use to use any or all of these suggestions: your name, the copyright symbol, a comment or a website address.

OK! Let’s go. In this example, we will add the phrase “WinWatermark – The Best Watermark Software You Really Need” to the picture “DSCN1001.jpg”.

1) Open WinWatermark and Import a picture from your hard drive by clicking the IMPORT button.

2) In the resulting pop-up box, locate the folder with the images in the left pane, and click (select) each image to be watermarked in the right pane. Click NEXT.

3) Name the imported images (Library Name) and decide what to do with the source images. By default, WinWatermark names the Library the same as the folder on the hard drive. Click FINISH.

4) Once images have been imported into the Library, select the photos to be watermarked, then click Edit to begin adding a text watermark to an image.

5) By hovering over the icons in the red rectangular box shown below, a small text window displays each icon’s functionality. Click on the T icon to add a text watermark to an image.

6) The pop-up window shown below is the default screen that appears when beginning the watermark process.

7) To add the text WinWatermark – The Best Watermark Software You Really Need, click in the area circled in red. Click Apply to view the text watermark.

8) If the text watermark is not visible, which it may not be, click the watermark created again and increase the size of the font or change the color of the text so that the watermark is visible.

TIP: By clicking the underlined watermark text, a new text watermark window is opened!

9) Increase the font size by clicking the drop down box shown below, and selecting a larger font size. Change the font color to view the text watermark more clearly.

TIP: If a font size is not listed in the drop down box, simply type in the preferred size in the box.

When the color box is clicked, a color wheel appears offering a wide variety of colors. Click OK when a new color has been selected.

The font size and font color are options that can be changed at any time.

TIP: By selecting a bright color, the watermark stands out more and is easily to locate on the photo. Once you are satisfied with your watermark, select the desired color for the final watermark.

10) After clicking Apply, you will see the newly created text watermark.

This will speed up the editing process if changes can be seen as they are made.

11) To make the text bold, italicized, or underlined, click on any or all of the icons within the red circle. These buttons act as toggle switches turning the feature on (turns icon blue) when clicked and off (turns icon black) when clicked a second time.

TIP: As changes are made, watch the watermark on the image change too.

The text itself is left-justified by default, but can be changed to centered or right justified. These icons are to the right of the Bold, Italic, and Underline icons.

Not only can the watermarked text be positioned, so can the watermark itself. Below the font size drop down box, are nine (9) different alignment properties that can be selected to position the watermark.

The alignment in this screenshot is centered on the image itself as indicated by the arrow with the selected “middle” icon a lighter shade than all other property icons.

As a final watermark location is chosen, check each alignment property to view the resulting watermark on the image, never leaving editing mode for the text watermark.

This text watermark below is bold, italicized, underlined and centered with the positioning of the watermark configured to be middle bottom of the photo. A watermark like this one won’t distract the viewer from focusing on the photo itself.

12) Special effects can be added to a text-based watermark, like enabling shadow effects. Check the box to enable shadow and if need be, click the color box to select a different color. Many times, selecting a bright color will help display the watermark better; then a final color can be selected after testing is complete.

13) Sometimes a text watermark needs to be more visible and needs “Enable Background” selected. Check this box to give the watermark more focus. Change the background color as needed.

14) Watermarks can be made translucent or opaque so as not to take away from the vibrancy of the original photo. Check the box “Make Translucent” and increase or decrease the amount of transparency as is desired. Watch the resulting watermark as you make changes to these numbers.

There are many options to be discovered when creating a text-based watermark. Test them all to see if they are something you would like to use to protect your digital images prior to publishing them on the Internet.
